“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
Psalm 11:3
My friends, I believe that we all can say with certainty that we are living in very
challenging times. The things that we’ve seen happening before our very own eyes the last few months are scary, painful, and concerning, to say the least. Like David said in Psalm 11 thousands of years ago, the foundations are being destroyed right in front of our very eyes. The word translated “foundations” refers here to the moral and spiritual underpinnings of any society. We see that happening in our days, don’t we?
In times like these, the question that’s being asked is “What can the righteous (the child of God) do when the foundations crumble beneath them?”
I have no political advice to offer even though as many of you know, I am a proud patriot, so grateful to be an american citizen. I also do believe that Christians need to take their convictions with them into the voting booth. We ought to write letters, speak out, refuse to be intimidated, support good candidates, and run for office ourselves. I’m not in the “roll over and play dead” category. But the important point that I would like to make today through this short article is that when the foundations are shaken, I believe that we need to remind ourselves what we believe in, and the principles that define us as christians. We also need a fresh view of God.
With that being said, my hope is that you who are reading this would join me in affirming the following things … I am determined to:
- Continue to have respect for the God appointed offices and daily pray for all people that God has allowed to be in those places, (president, vice president, governors, senators, mayors, law enforecement agencies, …etc), whether I always agree with them or not – the Bible tells me so! (1 Timothy 2:1-2; Romans 13:1-14)
- Be compassionate and love ALL people, seeing them through God’s eyes – the Bible tells me so! ( John 3:16 )
God sees each of us through eyes of unconditional love. It does not matter who people are – how educated they are, or how they look like. Christ died for all.
- Let my light shine in the neighborhood, workplace, community, or anywhere I
find my self to be – the Bible tells me so (Matthew 5:16)
Yes, the foundations are being shaken before our eyes. But David continues and in verse 4 of Psalm 11 and he says, “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven” (v. 4). This is David’s way of saying God is everywhere. He is Sovereign over the whole universe. I admit that it doesn’t always look that way. When you read the headlines, it can seem as if the whole world is spinning out of control. However, we believe there is a God who sits on the throne of the universe, a God who is absolutely Sovereign, a God whose ways are far above our ways, a God to whom the whole human race must someday give an account “For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds. The upright will see His face” (v. 7).
David stands on the peak of faith and says, “Though the battle may be hot and we may be surrounded, God will win in the end, and so will God’s people.”
So fear not, child of God. No one knows what will happen tomorrow. But our God is
faithful to keep every one of His promises. Don’t be discouraged. In this hour of moral and spiritual crisis, God has opened a huge door for the gospel proclamation. When the foundations of society are destroyed, we can say to men and women everywhere, “Christ is the firm foundation, the cornerstone that will never be shaken.”
When darkness seem to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord,
Lord of all.
