Memorial Day 2026

Memorial Day 2026
May 20, 2026 by First Baptist Church of Kasson

                   Please Remember!

What a great Memorial Day weekend and celebration we’ve all had! This brings a question to mind – What actually is Memorial Day and what does it represent? As we all know, Memorial Day it’s more than the beginning of summer vacation, barbecues in the back yard, and family get togethers. It represents something very special, for its very name calls us to remember something. The ability to remember is a wonderful gift God has given us. In a flash we can be a child again, skipping rocks across a pond, or walking in a meadow. All is possible through the blessing of memory.

Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember certain people in history. We especially remember those who have died – those whose lives have been taken in war or other tragic events. Very briefly I want to point out to you two important things that we need to make sure we remember on Memorial Day and always:

  1. We must remember the Soldiers – Every time I see a flag fly, I remember the soldiers and the fact that my freedom came with a price. The men and women who wear the uniform, whether it be the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Space Force or Coast Guard, left the comfort of their homes and they serve our nation with pride. When our soldiers put on that uniform, they understand and they are told that they may very well be called upon to give their lives for their country. One marine wrote the following:           “It’s the soldier, not the reporter who has given us Freedom of the Press.

It’s the soldier, not the poet, who has given us Freedom of Speech.

It’s the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the Freedom to       Demonstrate.

It’s the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the Right to a Fair Trial.

It’s the soldier, who salutes the flag, serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag.”

Please, thank a soldier this week, if you have not done so already!

  2. We must remember the Savior – “knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” 1Peter 1:18,19

Memorial Day not only recognizes a national sacrifice, but a spiritual sacrifice as well. We not only commemorate the blood that was shed to ensure our national freedom, but we also commemorate the blood that was shed to ensure our spiritual freedom, by the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, paid the ultimate sacrifice on the cross of Calvary so that we could be free from the penalty of sin and have a home reserved for us in heaven.

Before you ever thought about Him, he was thinking about you. Before you even believed in Him, He believed in you.  The Bible states that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8. We are not of our own. We were purchased with a price (1Corinthians 6:20). You have been redeemed and set free by the blood of Christ (1Peter 1:18,19).

My friend, if you are His child, you owe Him everything. Honor Him with your life and words. He is worthy of our praise and honor. If you are not a professed Christian yet, if you are still on the fence or staying in the shadows, it’s time that you seriously start thinking about this and put your trust in Christ Jesus. He loves you and is waiting on you to come “home”. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” 1John 1:12,13.  Life with Christ at the center of it is fun and fulfilling.

So, let’s take time this week to remember and to thank a Soldier,
and to remember and thank The Savior!
