O What a Savior, O Hallelujah
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished: and He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost.” John 19:30
For us Christians, this week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday is the most important week of the year. We are commemorating the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of the One whose name is above all names – Jesus Christ. I would like to remind you briefly that while Christ was on the cross on Good Friday, He made 7 statements that are recorded for us in the gospels. We like to refer to these statements as: “The last seven sayings of Christ”. You see, last words are important, but if there were ever last words that are extremely important, without a doubt, these words are the final words that Jesus spoke from the cross that day, as He gave Himself as a ransom for all. His final words reveal His love for us. What can we learn from the saying “It is finished”?
I. That Christ’s work on earth was finished
Everything the Father had sent Him to do, He did. Jesus left nothing undone. He offers salvation as a finished work. The Greek work for “finished” is “tetelestai”, which means “paid in full”. His main mission in coming to earth was to show us the Father, to reconcile us back to God – “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10
My friend, don’t let anyone tell you that you have to do something in order to earn the favor of God. Trying to add to the work of Christ would be like adding eyebrows to the Mona Lisa painting. It is complete the way it is. To add to it, would cheapen it. All you have to do is accept it by faith, trusting in Christ as your personal Lord and Savior –“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12,13
II. That our future in heaven is settled
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:1-3
Easter always reminds me that there is more to life than here and now, that one day I will leave this earthly “tent”, and at that moment, I will be more alive than ever … for, “to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord.” 2Corinthians 5:8. … All God’s children have this blessed hope.
“O what a Savior, O hallelujah
His heart was broken on Calvary
His hands were nail scarred
His side was riven
He gave His life-blood for even me.”
Enjoy God’s abundant blessings this Easter season and always!
