I must admit, my heart has been very heavy the last few months, especially the last few weeks observing what is taking place in our country. The Lord kept prompting me to say/write something and I kept putting it off. But tonight, after we had our family devotional (prayer and reading of God’s Word), I told my wife and kids – “ I am going to my office at church, to get something off my chest”, and here I am typing this and sharing it with you.
I landed in this great nation on March 8, 1990 after escaping the communist regime in Romania on September 15, 1989. Oh, the freedom, the respect, the joy, the pride to be an American that I could sense, see around, and experience back then! I can’t help but ask myself lately, what happened? What happened to this great nation that was once founded on Biblical principles? What happened to the reverential fear of the Lord that we once had? What happened to our elected leaders who are supposed to represent us the people, and not their own agendas in Washington? What happened to the respect that we once had for the men and women in uniform – law enforcement, military, etc, who are working around the clock putting their lives on the line to protect our families? What happened to the deep respect we once had to stand when the national anthem is being sang? What happened to those times when we used to turn on the TV or open the newspaper, and we could hear/read a good unbiased report, instead of many of the media agencies now openly taking sides.
My heart is heavy, and I am concerned by what I see, and I believe that like me there are millions of other Americans. How could we not? When will this circus that’s dividing our country end? Certainly, it will all end, when Lord Jesus will return and bring all things to an end, but in the meantime, we are still here. What are we to do? In times like these, I would like to ask you to pray with me and reflect on the words of Jeremiah the prophet-
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.” (Lamentations 3:22-24)
As the faitful God that He is, He has the power to carry out His perfect plan for our lives and to accomplish His perfect purposes through the troubling events and circumstances that are taking place in our nation now before our own eyes. And as the faithful Creator and Sovereign God that He is, He can be counted on to do it.
Me and you are called to trust and hope in Him and to patiently wait for His divine plans to be accomplished, while we are doing our part. We are called to be men and women of prayer who regularly pray for those that God has allowed to be in public office; we are called to go out and cast our vote when election time comes. We are called to love the Bible – God’s Word and build our lives on it. We are called to be (and we are, according to Matthew 5) the light and the salt of the earth.
My dear friends and fellow citizens of this great country, let us do our best to make a difference in this world through the time that we have left and let us unreservedly share in love with people around us the message that Jesus Saves and He is preparing a place for His people, where there will be no more evil and no more sin.
I will close this short heart to heart post with a quote of D.L. Moody that the Lord reminded me of this evening: “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And that which I can do, by the grace of God, I will do.”
Hoping in the Lord with you,
God’s servant and yours, John Todor
